Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike Press Release – January 16, 2018

Valley Players bring Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike to Napa Valley

Valley Players and the Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at Lincoln Theater present the 2013 Tony Award winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang for three performances on February 1, 2 and 3 at 7pm at the Lincoln Theater in Yountville.

NAPA, CA, JANUARY 16, 2018 – The troupe then takes their show to the Mira Theatre in Vallejo for performances on February 9 and 10 at 7pm and February 11 at 2pm.

Chekhov is alive and well in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where adult siblings Vanya and Sonia reside in their old family home, mourning their lost dreams and missed opportunities. When their often-wrong but sometimes right, fortune-telling maid warns of impending dangers, and their movie-star sister, Masha, arrives unexpectedly with young, sexy, boy toy, Spike, the family is launched into a rollicking weekend of one-upmanship, exposed nerves, and a lot of broken mugs. With wit and absurdity, Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike blends Chekhov’s famous ennui with the modern-day toils and troubles of celebrity, social networking, and age into a laugh-out-loud comedy that will tickle your funny bone and stimulate your mind.

“… riotous … the show’s a ton of fun even if you can’t tell your Seagull from your Uncle Vanya …” —The New York Post

“Hugely entertaining … few contemporary playwrights have proven as deft as Durang at mining both the absurdity and the dangers of human folly … in its own deliciously madcap way, the new work offers some keen insights into the challenges and agonies of twenty-first century life.” —USA Today

“… deliriously funny … a heedless good time.” —The New York Times

“You’ve only spent a weekend with these people, but you might want to spend the rest of your life with Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.” —HuffingtonPost.com

Directed by Carla Spindt and Lu Kenmonth and featuring Paul Cotten, June Alane Reif, Randi Storm, Linda Howard, Michael Hunter and Courtney South, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is funded in part by a grant from the Napa Valley Arts Council and the generosity of the Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at Lincoln Theater. It is recommended for mature audiences.
