The Lover Reprisal – August 2, 2017

Valley Players returns to Vallejo with The Lover

The Napa Register called this production “bright, daring” and the performances “superbly ironic” and “elegantly smooth.”

VALLEJO, CA, August 2, 2017 – Valley Players reprises its production of The Lover by renowned playwright Harold Pinter at Bay Area Stage Theater, September 1-17.

Valley Players chose this small cast, one-act play with minimal set requirements for their very first production last January at the Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at Lincoln Theater in Yountville, where it ran for three performances. Later, director Debbie Baumann noted that a lot of work went in to that three-day run and it “left us wanting to perform it again! These actors are some of the best in the valley and deserve another chance to perform this intriguing show”

Apparently, their audiences agree. The show garnered patron comments like “the acting was sublime, the directing and staging superb”, “extraordinary performance from the cast” and “performed with panache and assurance.” The overall production comes highly recommended as well, eliciting such glowing remarks as The Lover is a mind-bending expose on how couples can play naughty little games – smokin’ hot!” and “an excellent play, don’t miss it… I can assure you, it is a total enjoyment!!”

The Lover is a quirky, tense, intriguing play by Harold Pinter that examines the private intricacies of modern marriage. To all outward appearances, Sarah and Richard are a respectable, conventional suburban couple. Behind closed doors, however, the couple enjoys a surprising and intriguing arrangement. Like any of Pinter’s works, this one-act contains the laughs, tears, and tensions that arise from the social intricacies of modern life.

Directed by Debbie Baumann and featuring June Alane Reif, Richard Pallaziol, Robert Silva and Walter Hamlin, The Lover is recommended for adult audiences only and will be performed September 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17 at Bay Area Stage Theater on Broadway in Vallejo on Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm. and Sundays at 3pm. Tickets are available online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-lover-tickets-35618598186, by calling 707-948-6273 or at the door beginning 1 hour before the start time of the show.
